A: That depends greatly on your gait and the level of over-pronation you have. There are different types of shoes for different types of flat-footed runners. However, all of these different types of shoes will have certain key traits:
- They offer a lot of support. That means when you bend the shoe, the bend should be in the toe section. It should not be towards the middle, because that means there’s hardly any support there for your arch.
- It should have a stiff outer sole. Some shoes are naturally easy to twist and torque. You shouldn’t be able to do that with the best running shoes for men with flat feet. With a stiff outer sole, it reinforces the support offered by the shoe and it also counteracts your tendency to roll your feet inward (or to over-pronate, in other words).

It’s similar to how it will smoothly counter any tendency of your feet to roll back inwards.
- Of course, you still have other factors to consider besides features specifically beneficial for flat feet. There’s cushioning and comfort, which are essential especially if you are new to running or having some slight weight issues. There’s price to consider as well. Of course, you need to find the right shoes if you want to fast.
- Aren’t Stiff Shoes Uncomfortable?
A: That depends. That may be true in the old days, but now most running shoes have ample amounts of cushioning. You can have both support and cushioning in a single pair of shoes.
- Can Neutral Shoes Work for Flat Feet?
A: Nowadays, some people espouse the idea of natural barefoot running. That means wearing neutral minimalist running shoes that encourage more natural foot movements.
Now it is possible that neutral shoes (shoes that assume you don’t over-pronate) may work. But this is quite uncommon. Your most prudent course of action is to go with stability shoes at first. Later on, you can try out neutral and minimalist shoes.
There was actually a time when the military didn’t allow anyone to serve if they have flat feet. That’s not always true anymore, and part of the reason for that is because there are lots of shoes that can compensate for the problem.
So it’s not true that you’re absolutely required to quit running if you have flat feet. It’s true that running on pavement may not be the right idea, especially without the best running shoes for flat feet. But you can still jog and run on trails and on the track, especially with the right sort of footwear on your feet.
Despite the advice here, you still have to realize that people have different feet and different preferences. What’s right for others may not be right for you.
